Poppies
Native to Eurasia, the poppy is an annual plant with brilliant red flowers that creates beautiful carpets of color in freshly disturbed soils and has been associated with agriculture since ancient times due to its life cycle adapted to grain crops.
In the language of flowers, the poppy embodies meanings such as "fragile ardor", beauty or even consolation. In France, the poppy wedding symbolizes the 8 years of marriage according to folklore.
During the 20th century, the poppy became a symbol of remembrance in Commonwealth countries, particularly to honor soldiers who fell during the First World War. This connection between the poppy and memory stems from a poem called "In Flanders Fields" written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. Poppies bloomed on the trenches and soldiers' graves, symbolizing the bloodshed of war. This practice was promoted by Moina Michael, and the fabric poppies were sold to support war orphans. Today, the sale of paper poppies is a tradition on Remembrance Day.
In Greco-Latin mythology, the poppy is associated with Morpheus, the god of dreams and sleep.
